A Thankful Heart

For 2 months The Hired Hand and I have watched hardly anything else on TV but The Walton’s. Since going through our family crisis, we just couldn’t focus or stand any more stress….we had enough of our own.

Have I really missed anything important on the news? Those dirty, lazy bums protesting of the unfairness of life? Really? Didn’t their Mamas ever tell them that life isn’t fair. Guess not. I’m guessing they come from this generation that thinks they are entitled to something…..rather EVERYTHING! Whether they work for it or not. The politicians who ought to be fired if they don’t do their jobs! That’s what happens in the real world. The drop in the stock market….watching our retirement get further and further out of our reach.

The way we’ve chosen to relax from a world of cares, is to settled on a simpler time. A time during The Great Depression when the people of the hills didn’t have much in the way of materialism, but they had an abundance of blessings in the land, the work of their hands, the relationships that abounded at their table and in their faith.

We comment to one another about how many scenes of The Walton’s are at the table. They are always eating! They always have enough for one more. They never close the door on someone in need. Their hearts are always bigger than their wallets. Even if it means working a second job or selling a priceless procession. They did what they had to.

This famous Norman Rockwell painting was done for the war effort in 1943. It depicts a multi-generational family. A family not much different than The Walton’s. Grandma and Grandpa the patriarchs. The glue. The character builders of generations to follow. Kids and grandkids. Mothers and fathers.

I hope that this Thanksgiving Day you will remember the simpler times. Stop rushing to obtain more. Stop the madness that seems to dominate this time of year. Relax and enjoy your friends and family.

As we always do we will go around our table today and give thanks for 5 things. It usually brings tears to our eyes and no doubt this year will be no different. We have suffered great loss this year and yet our hearts are grateful to the Lord, for He has done great things!

Happy Thanksgiving Friends!
