Lasagna In The Garden

Remember this back in the early Spring? I was building some Lasagna beds. With a little help…trouble!

We layered some large cardboard boxes over existing grass and layered manure straw on top of the boxes.

Then my neighbor brought me 4-6 loads of grass clippings from his yard.

That went on with some manure compost.

Then I was finally ready to mix top soil with peat and compost.

This is what I got! It really looks so nice. And it’s decomposed very well. While digging in to plant, the cardboard was already broken down. I realize that there is glue in the boxes….but heck, I can’t pull all the grass up and it’s nearly done me in in the past trying to dig it all out.

Like we say around here, “Work smarter not harder!!!”:)

My little friend Missy has been digging up some of my plants! Bad kitty!

Planted some Coreopsis.

A whole tray of Pansies that I started from seed! And a ton of Calendula!

Of course I never am bothered by Mullein that seeds its self. It is one of my winter medicinals that I wouldn’t be without.

So pretty. Ready to send up that spike of yellow flowers!

I lined the beds with Lavender that I also started from seed. I didn’t know it was so easy to start most of these herbs from seed…yes, they are very small and won’t flower probably until next year, but they only cost me the expense of the seeds!

My local garden center had a sweet selection of herbs this year! I was so excited to find Patchouli and Jasmine!!!:DThe leaves of the Patchouli smell….well, just like Patchouli!! Love that stuff!!!

Next I have the beds in front of the shed to build. I have a ginormous pile of grass clippings to move so I can finish my herb bed in front of the garden.

These Lasagna gardens work like a charm! And are practically effortless….I said, practically!

Hi Marilyn, I bought my herb seeds from Horizon Herbs. They offer a wide variety of medicinal herbs and some that are hard to find.

Love it! I hope to do some lasagna beds in the fall to be ready for next spring. I got some patchouli at the nursery too! Which one do you go to? Beautiful pics!
