Our Little Buddy Burger was castrated a week and a half ago.
When the Vet arrived, I told her that I was hoping she could manage this one alone….she smiled and said, “no, I’ll need your help.”
GULP….and I pulled up my big girl pants.
Of course I got the head! And we tied Buddy up tight to a post and I rubbed his face and held his tail….UP. That way he couldn’t kick the Vet and it was out of the way.
I opted for cutting, since it was virtually painless (at least for me) and the most humane form of castration.
If you think banding is the best alternative, then I challenge you to twist a rubber band around your finger and leave it….when it starts to pain you, leave it alone until your finger falls off!
Just kidding….DO NOT DO WHAT I JUST SAID!!!!!! I take no responsibilities for your stupidity!
We gave Buddy some pain stuff and she proceeded. And this is where my post ends and Granny Miller’s begins. She took pics. I did NOT! Hey, I was busy holding Buddy’s head.
So, if you want graphic details and pics of the castration….she has it.
BUT I warn you…pull up your big girl or big boy pants…it looks just wretched…but it’s not. Buddy was up and playing in no time. He spent a couple nights with Joy to help him heal faster. I just believe in that bond and the endorphins it creates.
Buddy seemed to calm down almost instantly. He goes to bed all by his big boy self now. All I have to do is direct him toward the stall and he runs in! What a good calf he is! Now he’ll be even gooder!

We have a small herd of grass-fed beef cattle too…and I always wince a little when my Mister mentions that the calves need to be castrated! But I think it’s important for people to know the ins and outs of “real life” on a farm. And just where their food comes from! Thanks for shairng…
