Early Stages of Labor???

This morning I woke up and just had thoughts and feelings that “our” birth was eminent. I couldn’t get out the door fast enough to check on Joy.

It started pouring rain yesterday and hasn’t stopped so I opened up what I call “The Birthing Center” for her yesterday. I moved the electric so she could get into the room where everyone seems to give birth. She went in cautiously and stood there with her head out the door looking like she belonged.

This morning, she has just been moving here and there. Not feeling comfortable with any place. She hasn’t gone into the room except to stick her head in and stand.

I did morning chores early so I could see how she looked. She seems (although the human eye can trick you) to be a bit more slab sided. Her ligaments around her tail are loose and she’s just not her usual self. I laid down some clean straw and gave her a bucket of Orchard Grass Hay. She’s still just standing there.

So, in my little experience of watching the goats go into labor the day before and then progressing the next morning, I think it’s getting close. Her behavior is changed and she hasn’t headed for the back 40 which is her favorite place to be. So, now we wait. Just like when my babies were born.

But now I’m the Grandmama waiting on our new little wee one. Oh it’s an exciting time.

I’m guessing maybe by tomorrow we’ll have our first little calf born at Peaceful Acres.

Oh what Joy!

Thanks Judy. I plan to add some molasses to it also. I filled a bucket tonight hoping to just add hot later when needed. I don’t think she’s going to calve tonight, but I’m ready.

Diane, Soon after Joy has given birth, offer her a bucket of fresh warm water to drink. She will thirstily drink it down and be grateful to you!

It doesn’t look like it will be long. She is “bagged up”. Good luck Grandmama. I know how you feel. We just love em.
