I am incredibly tired….and by the look of it, Lady is too. Nothing new on that front for either of us. But today is only the day before Thanksgiving. Tomorrow evening, for sure you will find me in “my chair” knitting with my feet off the floor.
I love Thanksgiving. Really. I love love love it. It is a completely feel good holiday for me. The food is good and the company is good (unless the dysfunction seeps out!). I set the table with the things that remind me of those I love. My Gma’s handmade cutwork table cloth. My other Gma’s dishes. Honey’s Gma’s silver. And we give thanks to God for His bountiful gifts.
I miss our families though. My sis Jackie is in CA and my other sis Auntie M (I love calling her that…Auntie M Auntie M!!) is probably propping her feet up enjoying the day off from work. Our parents are now too decrepit and tired to drive this far. Honey’s dad has been in and out of the hospital again after his ATV accident. Honey will be making a trip to see him soon. We fear that he isn’t able to recover from the severity of the trauma to his 87 yr old body and that his time with us is short. It’s a looming sadness that is hanging over our holiday. But it is a joy remembering all the tales he has told at our table in years past. Tales of WWII and being shot at by the Nazis. Tales of hunting many a deer. Tales of romancing his sweetheart at 18 in Texas. He’s a funny man. Reserved but funny. He is so loved.
I was energized today with all my preparations because Honey will be able to take Gpa some of my yummy goodness food. Food that is nourishing because it was grown well. Food that just might give him courage to fight the good fight. I’m convinced that I could nurse him back, but he’s too far away. So, in an effort to encourage his old body to recover I’m sending yummy goodness leftovers that I know he will enjoy. And with that is a wonderful Pumpkin Pie that I made on Thanksgiving Eve.

I used bits and pieces of recipes and if the spoon is any indication…..OMIGOLLY is it good! I thought I’d share it with you just in case you’re searching for a recipe that doesn’t include a can of “milk”….OH YUCK! I am sure that my kids are going to change their minds about Pumpkin Pie once they taste this! Especially with some raw heavy whipped cream on top!
What shall I call it?? Pumpkin Pie…no too simple. Pumpkin Spice Delight….maybe. A Creamy Pumpkin Pie…maybe. I know….NO CANNED MILK Pumpkin Pie!!! Or Nourishing Pumpkin Pie… It will come to me when everything does…..while I’m trying to sleep!
OK….I don’t know what to call it. Maybe you can help.
Here is the recipe for a pumpkin pie without canned milk!
1 1/4 C Heavy Raw Cream
1/4 C Raw Milk
2 Lg Pastured Eggs
2 C Fresh Pumpkin Puree (or canned)
2/3 Raw Sugar (unrefined)
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Mix well and pour into pie shell.
Pie Shell
1/3 C Lard (or all butter)
2 Tbsp Raw Butter
2 C flour (I use unbleached, you could use sprouted or whole wheat)
1 tsp salt
Ice Water
Use pastry knife to cut the lard & butter into the flour until you’ve got little pea size pieces. Using only 1 Tbsp of ice water at a time, blend into flour mixture. Use from 2-4 Tbsp or until you can form dough into a ball. Roll.
Pour pumpkin mixture into pie shell and bake at 425* 15 mins. Reduce heat to 350* and bake 45 min’s or until knife comes out clean. Cool on rack. Serve with more raw heavy cream whipped or not. Or just apply it to your hips as I’m doing!
As is our Thanksgiving tradition….we ALWAYS sample the pies on Thanksgiving Eve….and just so you don’t gag….I’m sampling…..OMIGOLLY this is so good! Way good!
So if you’re looking for a recipe that doesn’t call for a can of “milk” then here you go. The first piece didn’t come out very clean….so I didn’t show you…I ate it though and it was just as good. Maybe after setting in the frig overnight it will serve up nicer….so if it does I’ll show you…but if it doesn’t….looks aren’t everything!
ENJOY! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
More yummy goodness recipes to follow this week for sure!

Hi Karen!!! Thanks for stopping by my blog. You can leave a message and if it’s private I won’t make it public….pretty simple. I control it from here!
That’s too funny…you have your own cow and you ran out of cream! Glad your pie was delicious, mine was too.
Hi, Diane!
Great website! I’m glad you saw my pm on KFC, I’ve really been missing you.
You may need to tell me how & where to leave private messages for you here. I’ve never really looked to deeply at a blog before.
I had just enough cream for whipped on Thanksgiving, so I used 3/4 yogurt, 1/4 raw milk to replace what the recipe calls for (blech!). I think it made the best pumpkin pie we’ve ever had.
Have a great day!
Karen
Pop it in some hot water and it will thaw quickly. You might want to tweak the spices….we thought they were a little mild. Hope it turns out for you…I’m ready for another!
I didn’t make a pumpin pie this year and it’s haunting me. I’m taking some pumpkin out of the freezer for this now! Maybe it will be ready by dinner…
Pam, I’d love to see or read about your experience growing sweet potatoes. My soil is too heavy and I haven’t been successful. I’m thinking of using our fire pit which is the old sandpile to grow them next year.
Gpa is doing better. Honey has enjoyed his visit and Gpa ate all the food I sent! I’d love to be able to feed him good nutrient dense food.
I’m looking forward to seeing your cheese!
Sounds just like the pumpkin pie I’ve made for years…though now it will definitely be with raw milk. I quit using the canned milk years ago. Right now were into making Sweet Potato pie being we harvested a ton of them.
I know the looming feeling of sadness your feeling…we just got news before Thanksgiving of a dear friend diagnosed with Chronic Leukemia so now we join together in illnesses with in our families…hard to go through but know that the Lord knows the outcome no matter what.
Just finished my cheese…..YUMMY.
We’ve got lots of snow here!
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving Paula! Any snow yet??? It sure feels like it tonight…but I’m thinkin it won’t. It’s funny we grow up thinking we can’t make a pumpkin pie without that canned “milk”. It really was delicious!
I have done something similiar, except I used kefir in place of the milk.
Its quite incredible!
You welcome Emily, I hope you like it. We think it needs a little more spice…I’ll have to play with it to get the spices right, but it is very good!
We are making this pie today! Thanks for the recipe!
